St. Gilbertson
(Sturlaugur Guđbrandsson)
1850-1939

St. Gilbertson was born in Kaldrananes in Strandasýsla, a farm at the north coast of
Iceland. His Icelandic name was Sturlaugur Guđbrandsson. He moved at age of 11 with
his parents to Hvítidalur in Saurbćr, Dalasýsla. He was a  farmer at Tjaldanes, Saurbćr,
1877-1878. He moved with his family to Minnesota 1878, first years he was farming in 
Nordland Township, but moved into town, Minneota, in 1886. Gilbertson's son in Iceland
with Helga Guđmundsdóttir, before his marriage, was (1) Rögnvaldur Sturlaugsson
(1873-1942). Gilbertson married 1877 Áslaug Guđmundsdóttir (1850-1921) from
Tjaldanes, Saurbćr. Their children were (2) Leifur (1878), born in Iceland, he probably
died as child, (3) Gilbert "Gillie" (Guđbrandur) in Wisconsin and Minnesota, (4) John
(Jón) Sterling (1882-1930) in McAlester, Oklahoma, (5) Gudlogur (Guđlaugur) Holm
(Mar. 8, 1888) in North Dakota and (6) Frieda (Sigfríđur) (Dec. 7, 1890) in Minneota
and Colorado. There are only descendants alive from Rögnvaldur, John Sterling
and Frieda. 

Rögnvaldur
Sturlaugsson
1873-1942

Rögnvaldur lived in Saur-
bćr, Dalasýsla, Iceland. He
graduated as "gagnfrćđing-
ur" from Möđruvallaskóli 1901
and was a schoolteacher in
winters and directed work at
public roads building in summer.
He also was farming from time
to time. His first wife (1910) was
Margrét Gísladóttir, she died
1911. His second wife (1915)
was Valgerđur Lýđsdóttir
(1890-1976). They had one
daughter, Unnur Rögnvalds-
dóttir.

John Sterling
Gilbertson
1882-1930

John Sterling was born in
Minneota. He homesteaded
160 acres of land in Montana
(near Fairview) before moving
to Okmulgee, Oklahoma where
he was a bookkeeper. He moved
to McAlester, Oklahoma when
Lawrence was about six years
old. He was an accountant
/auditor at Russell Hardware
and Department Store in
McAlester before he died in
1930. He and his wife
Beda Elizabeth Hultman had
one son, Lawrence.

Frieda Leland
(Sigfríđur)
1890-1967

Frieda  graduated from
Minneota High School in
1908 and from nursing
school at Winnipeg Gene-
ral Hospital in 1917. She
was a schoolteacher for
some years. She married
Frank (Franklin) Leland and
they had three sons, John
Stuart in California, Rolland
(1926-1967) and Charles
(died 1932, the day after he
was born). Frank operated
the "Leland Drug" in
Minneota for many years,
but in their later years they
lived in Denver, Colorado.

Unnur
Rögnvaldsdóttir
1917-1996

Unnur was born at Fell in
Strandasýsla, Iceland, and she
grew up in Saurbćr and
Skarđsströnd in Dalasýsla. In
1943 she married Gísli Guđjóns-
son (1914-1965) and they
moved to Akranes. Unnur's
mother, Valgerđur, moved with
them and lived at their home.
Unnur graduated as a teacher
in 1939 and was teaching from
time to time the first years.
Gísli worked as a carpenter most
of his life. He was taken ill last
5 years of his life. After Gísli's
death Unnur was teaching
until she retired in 1985.

Lawrence Sterling
Gilbertson
1912-1961

Lawrence graduated from
McAlester High School in
1929 and attended Oklahoma
State University for two years.
He was in the National Guard
in the 45th Battery. He fought
in Africa, Italy, Germany and
Austria during World War II.
When he returned to
McAlester, he worked in the
Engineering department for
Pittsburg County. Lawrence
Sterling married (1941) Vivian
Imogene Clark (1914 (?)). They
had three sons, all born in
McAlester in Oklahoma.

John Stuart
Leland
1930

John was born in Minneota,
Minnesota. He enlisted in
U.S. Air Force in 1950. He
graduated from University of
Denver 1956 with a degree in Chemistry. After working as a
chemist and later for the "U.S.
Drug and Food Administration",
he got bar admission (after
studying in a law school at
night) and worked first in private
practise and then for a dietary
supplement company for 21
years, until he retired in 1995.
John and his wife, Janice, were
married 1957. They have two
children and live in Long
Beach, California.
