| The Web of Relatives is for us, the descendants of St. Gilbertson in Minneota, Minnesota. In January 1st 1999 my wife and I went from Iceland (where we live) to Minneapolis for a 10 days trip. I knew that my great grandfather emigrated from Iceland in 1878 and lived in Minneota, a town not far from Minneapolis. His first son was born before his marriage and was left home in Iceland. That was my grandfather. I did not know much more than this about my great grandfather. In January 7th, the day before my 50th birthday, we got a rental car and drove to Minneota in a very cold and freezing day. We really did not know what to expect in our visit. We discovered that in Minneota there were many people of Icelandic origins. At the end of the day we had been shown my great grandfather's grave, his house and the Icelander's Church in the town and we also got a little insight in the history of the Icelandic immigrants in Minneota. At last we got address of the only descendant of my great grandfather they in Minneota did know about, John Leland's address in California. Few weeks later I tried to find John Leland at InfoSeek on the Internet. I found his name and address and also a space for few words to send e-mail. This got me immediately in touch with John and later he got us in touch with the other descendants, the Gilbertson's from Oklahoma. This web is to bring all these relatives together and give them chance to learn to know each other. |
